Challenges to Adopting and Implementing Circular Economy Recommendations
Senator Karen Grogan queried Professor John Thwaites about the hurdles in adopting circular economy recommendations. Professor Thwaites cited key challenges, including a lack of understanding, cultural attitudes, high initial costs, inconsistency, and skills gaps. To overcome these, he stressed the need for behaviour and systems change, as well as investment in time, political will, and funding. Professor Thwaites noted a strong national consensus on circular economy principles. The conversation also explored the role of primary school education in teaching these principles. While education is crucial, Professor Thwaites emphasised that parents must also adapt, and that consistency, standards, and regulation are essential to underpin the circular economy.
