Advisory Group Recommendations and Circular Economy Development
Senator Catryna Bilyk and Professor John Thwaites explored the circular economy in Australia, focusing on key areas such as skills development and partnering with First Nations. They highlighted the need for a fundamental shift in thinking, with education and training systems embedding circular economy principles from kindergarten onwards. The discussion emphasised the importance of skills development, with Professor Thwaites noting that a circular economy requires a new way of thinking across all professions. He stressed the need for education systems to incorporate design thinking and circular economy principles, allowing for the development of reusable and durable systems. By adopting a circular economy framework, Australia can reduce carbon emissions – with the CSIRO estimating a potential 14% reduction by 2030 and 23% by 2050 – and promote biodiversity. The framework also presents opportunities for new businesses and job creation, with companies like Samsara and SunDrive Solar leading the way. However, Professor Thwaites noted that a clear regulatory framework is needed to support businesses and drive growth in the sector.
