Progress on Design Rules for Packaging
Senator Peter Whish-Wilson questioned the progress on design rules for packaging, noting the six-month delay since the department's initial announcement. In response, Cameron Hutchison, Branch Head of Waste & Resource Recovery Policy Branch, outlined the release of a new design for recyclability framework in December, which provides guidance on improving packaging design. This framework aims to signal to industry the direction needed to enhance packaging design. Although the work is complex, the department is taking a cautious approach, releasing guidance to inform future regulations. Senator Whish-Wilson expressed frustration at the delay, citing industry's call for certainty. The department is currently analysing consultation feedback on three potential reform models and will develop further advice for the government. The goal is to provide certainty for industry while improving packaging recyclability, acknowledging the need for a balanced approach that considers both industry and environmental needs.
