Hydrogen and Electric Vehicles
Antonio Zappia MP asked about the current state of hydrogen vehicles, referencing discussions from a year ago. Matthew Ryan, from the Emissions Reduction Division, noted that there are only a couple of hydrogen car models available, with low sales due to limited infrastructure. Hydrogen refuelling stations are scarce in Australia, making it difficult for owners to access them. The discussion also touched on electric vehicles, with Zappia inquiring about the range of newly imported models. Tristan Kathage explained the green vehicle guide and real-world testing program, which provides information on vehicle ranges and tests them in real-life conditions. Around 84 vehicles have been tested so far. Hydrogen may have a role in heavy vehicles, with some trials and development of refuelling infrastructure underway. However, refuelling and availability of hydrogen remain significant challenges. Zappia shared his experience of seeing hydrogen buses and heavy vehicles in Korea and Japan, highlighting the potential for hydrogen in these applications. Different countries will find different solutions to their transport needs, with Japan being more active in hydrogen use due to its energy economy. The real-world testing program is set to expand, while battery technology continues to evolve, leading to increased range and adaptability in electric vehicles. This progress may influence the development and adoption of hydrogen vehicles, with the market reflecting varying consumer needs.
