Barriers to Purchasing Electric Vehicles in Australia

Jennifer Ware MP queried the main obstacles to buying electric vehicles. Matthew Ryan from the Emissions Reduction Division noted that research is underway to understand what drives purchasing decisions, with range anxiety, inadequate charging infrastructure, and negative media coverage being key concerns. The discussion underscored the need to tackle these barriers. Tristan Kathage from the Reducing Surface Transport Emissions Branch pointed out that consumer surveys and data sources, such as the EV Council and the Australian Dealers Association, offer valuable insights into consumer concerns, including the cost of electric vehicles, which can now be purchased for under $30,000. The testimonies concluded by highlighting the growing availability of electric vehicle models, with 50 new models expected in 2025, and the importance of continued support for the transition to electric vehicles.
