Government Assistance for the Wine Industry

Senator Matthew Canavan questioned government support for the wine industry, particularly regarding funding to address oversupply issues. The Assistant Secretary, Paul Denny, discussed meetings with Accolade, which proposed reducing volumes, but did not seek government funding. Instead, they showed interest in the Viticulture and Wine Sector Working Group's exploration of potential government support. Senator Canavan expressed concern that the government was not considering a support package, given over 90% of warm-climate grape growers are unprofitable. Deputy Secretary Matt Lowe stated there were no plans for government assistance, and the working group did not recommend a funded exit package. Senator Canavan questioned the representation of growers in the working group, but was informed that Australian Grape and Wine, the industry's representative body, was part of the group. The conversation also covered Wine Australia's role and the issue of oversupply, with Senator Canavan suggesting a small amount of money could address the problem. While the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission declined to comment, Deputy Secretary Matt Lowe confirmed an oversupply of red grape wine exists.
