Riverina Winegrape Growers' Introduction and Need for Mandatory Code

Senator Matthew Canavan and Jeremy Cass, CEO of Riverina Winegrape Growers, discussed the challenges faced by winegrape growers in the Riverina region. Lower yields and prices have taken a toll, with some wineries paying less than the cost of production and delaying payments. The current voluntary code has limitations, including a lack of enforcement mechanisms and the fear of reprisals from wineries. Cass argued that a mandatory code is needed to address these issues, with provisions for negotiations, arbitration, and oversight by the ACCC. This would provide more effective regulation and protection for winegrape growers, ensuring fair and timely payments. A mandatory code would prevent non-signatories from undermining the code's effectiveness and provide a more level playing field for all parties. Cass emphasized that this is crucial for the long-term sustainability of the winegrape industry in the Riverina region.
